Genevieve Ryan | Strawberry Fields
Strawberry Fields was an exhibition that took place in Glasgow, instigated by designer & illustrator Genevieve Ryan, and funded by the much-missed ‘creative social network’ Central Station. The premise was very simple: an invitation to artists, designers, illustrators and photographers to submit pieces of work inspired by — or in response to — the Beatles’ song Strawberry Fields Forever. A full colour catalogue was produced to accompany the exhibition and provide a lasting memento of the show. The catalogue carefully documented the work submitted and included a rationale for each entry to shed light on the artists’ interpretations of the theme.
As well as designing the catalogue, Rydo also took great pleasure in submitting a piece for the show. The glittering screen print Engelbert Humperdinck Nº1 was conceived to pay tribute to the lesser spotted English crooner, whose breakthrough hit Release Me (and Let Me Love Again) stormed to the summit of the UK charts in 1967 and prevented the Beatles from achieving a number 1 single for the first time in five years. The single in question was of course Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever.
