Genevieve Ryan
Strawberry Fields

Print & Exhibition

Strawberry Fields was an exhibition project
held in Glasgow in 2010, instigated by illustrator Genevieve Ryan and funded by the ‘creative social network’ Central Station. The premise
was simple: an invitation to artists, designers, illustrators and photographers to submit pieces of work inspired by — or in response to — the Beatles’ song Strawberry Fields Forever. A full colour commemorative catalogue was designed and printed to accompany the exhibition and provide a lasting memento of the show. The catalogue carefully documented the work submitted and included a short rationale for each entry to shed light on the artists’ interpretations of the theme.

As well as providing the catalogue design, Rydo also took great pleasure in submitting a piece for the show. The glittering screen print ‘Engelbert Humperdinck Nº 1’ was conceived to pay tribute to the lesser spotted English crooner (and recent Eurovision Song Contest participant), whose breakthrough hit Release Me (and Let Me Love Again) stormed to the summit of the UK charts
in 1967 and prevented the Beatles from achieving a number 1 single for the first time since in five years. The single in question? Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever.
